Minimum Legal Requirements for Minors (California DMV)
Driver's Education is thirty (30), fifty (50) minute periods of classroom instruction OR a CA DMV approved Online course of study. Kings Driving School offers Driver's Education Online.
Driver's Training is a six (6) hour program of behind-the-wheel training, taught by a CA DMV licensed instructor from Kings Driving School at (818) 265-9551.
"I am approaching 15½ years old. What should I do now?" You can start anytime, though you WILL have to wait until you are 15½ before you may obtain your permit from the CA DMV. Just follow these 4 steps.
STEP 1: Pass Driver's Education
Click to start Driver's Education Online. At the end of the final test you will be mailed a Driver's Education Completion Certificate (DL400C).
STEP 2: Pass the DMV written test to obtain the provisional instructon permit
You need to complete the DMV's application form called a DL 44. To obtain the form call to the DMV's automated telephone service at (800) 777-0133 to have the DL 44 application mailed to you, or pick it up from any DMV field office or from Kings Driving School. Have both parent or legal guardians who have custody of you, sign the DL 44 application form. You do not sign the form until you are at the DMV. Only then will you be instructed to do so. (The DMV employee has to watch you sign the form).
When you arrive at your local DMV office, be sure to bring the following:
1. The DMV application DL 44 signed by both parent(s) or legal guardian(s).
2. Any legal document to prove your legal presence in the United States of America. Examples of legal documents: American Birth Certificate, American Passport, ID Card Issued By The DMV, Proof of Indian Blood Degree, Armed Forces ID Cards, Certificate of Naturalization, Permanent Resident Card, or Foreign Passport or Mexican Border Crossing Card with I-94.
3. Provide your SSN, which will be electronically verified with the Social Security Administration.
4. Pay a nonrefundable application fee. The fee is good for 12 months, for three times taking the written test and driving test, though the second and third driving test needs an additional fee.
5. Certificate Of Completion Of Drivers Education (DL 400B classrooom or DL400C online).
6. Make sure all documents are original (NO COPIES). The DMV will be taking your picture on this day, so be prepared for that, and your thumb print. Then you will be instructed to take the written test.
7. Eyeglasses or contact lenses if you need them to pass the eye test.
NOTE: If you are 17 1/2, you may obtain a permit without completing driver education or driver training. However, you can not get a license before you are 18 years old, or you must provide proof of driver education and training completion.
STEP 3: Complete your Driver's Training to obtain DL400D (BEHIND THE WHEEL CERTIFICATE) from Kings Driving School
Your provisional permit is NOT VALID until you start your Driver's Training (behind the wheel) with a DMV licensed driving instructor, or reach age 17 1/2. Before you leave the DMV, call Kings Driving School at (818) 265-9551 or contact us online to make your appointment.
Driver's Training (behind the wheel) is accomplished in a vehicle with DMV licensed driving instructors from Kings Driving School. (NO, your parent can not legally do this unless you have the instructor's signature on your permit, to validate your permit).
Once you finished your 6 hour behind the wheel training, you will be issued a Certificate Of Completion Of Behind The Wheel Driver Training (DL400D) by a Kings Driving School instructor.
NOTE: Practice, Practice, Practice!
Before you take the driving test at the DMV, you have to complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice (10 hours must be night driving) with parent(s), guardian(s), instructor(s) from Kings Driving School, or an adult 25 years of age or older who possess a valid California driver license. STEP 4: Take the DMV Driving Test at the DMV to obtain provisional driver's license
When you arrive at your local DMV office, bring with you all of the following:
1. Proof you have finished Driver's Training (DL400D) and had a California instruction permit for at least six months.
2. Provide parent(s) or guardian(s) signature(s) on your permit to verify the required training with them.
3. A California Licensed adult 25 years of age or older, or a driving instructor from Kings Driving School.
4. Insurance and registration of the vehicle you are using for the DMV driving test.
